"Astara was once a land of beauty and peace. The Astani people lived in harmony with their world and with each other. Valuing scientific research over petty squabbles, the Astani worked together to discover worlds beyond their own. Their studies culminated in the construction of the Landspire. What was intended to be a portal to new discoveries became a doorway to disaster. The first test of the portal opened a rift to a world they never imagined...a world filled with menace and evil...a world that would eventually lead to their demise.
Unwittingly opening a doorway to the ShadowRealm, Astara was flooded by dark creatures starved with a savage bloodlust. Forced into war, the Astani drew weapons for the first time in a thousand years and fought as one to drive back the darkness. The fight raged on for months, but the Astani lost ground each day as the seemingly endless shadow creatures, lead by the wicked Shadowwraiths, felled their best warriors.
By far the strongest and bravest of the Astani was their guardian Trevyn. Wielding the powerful Astani War Talons, Treyvn fought with the strength of an army, but even he could not hold back the Wraiths forever. Locking his only daughter Reia safely away in the Landspire he faced the shadows with all of his might. Many demons fell to the devastating Astani War Talons but, in the end, he could not defeat them all. Using the last of his strength he sealed the Talons to the very stone of Astara, intent on keeping them out of the hands of the Shadowwraiths. The final blast destroyed nearly all of the shadows...but one Wraith survived.
Hundreds of years later a new people arose out of the shattered remains of Astara. The gentle villagers knew nothing of the "Great War", but they would soon learn. Having rebuilt his forces, the last surviving Shadowwraith known as the wicked Dark Yabu, attacked without warning. His soldiers destroyed the village and enslaved the residents.
Among the villagers was the town's guardian Vargas, and his grandson Vexx. Placed to work mining the caves, Vexx endured the captor's whips until his rage overcame him and he struck back. He might have overcome his guard had the Dark Yabu not been near. As Vexx received punishment at the hands of Yabu, Vargas, in an attempt to save his grandson, attacked the Wraith. Yabu turned his rage on the guardian and struck him down before Vexx.
The horrors Vexx witnessed renewed his rage. In an attempt to exact revenge, Vexx snuck out of the caves under the cover of darkness, seeking a way to strike back. Upon the Wraith's windship he stumbled on the ancient Astani War Talons still clinging to a chunk of stone. As the youth approached, the talons awoke and sprung loose. Seeking a new master the Talons fused to Vexx's hands, granting him the power to confront the Shadowwraith and finish the war started so long ago." ⟶ official strategy guide (x)
The canon is an obscure 2003 collectathon platformer modeled after Super Mario 64; unsurprisingly, its plot isn't the most developed or nuanced thing in the world. I'm also making a note here that while Vexx is never shown to speak intelligibly in canon, there's no stated reason for it, such as innate muteness. The likeliest explanation is that, similar to Link from Legend of Zelda, he's disconnected from his environment to make it easier for the player to feel like the protagonist. For the sake of avoiding headaches in an RP context, I choose to play Vexx as being fully capable of speech and simply preferring not to.
Personality:
Once an innocent kid full of enthusiasm and reckless spirit, Vexx begins his adventure as a hotheaded, rage-fueled teenager that has had everything important to him ripped away. At the hands of Dark Yabu the Shadowwraith, his village was enslaved, exploited, and later eradicated. His grandfather and mentor, Vargas, was murdered right in front of him. Then, in a cruel twist, the old Valdar's soul was even denied the mercy of eternal peace, instead trapped within a magical amulet designed to feed upon his constant pain and fear until Vargas was no more. The thirst for vengeance is what's highlighted as the driving force behind Vexx's determination to undertake the near-impossible task of exacting retribution upon Dark Yabu for these atrocities. The Astani war talons themselves have observed that revenge has become Vexx's new purpose. It's a grim fixation that he never gets a chance to grow away from by the time that his journey ends with Dark Yabu's death.
With little else to live for and not knowing any other way to cope, Vexx has learned to channel his rage into a force that can protect him from within as well as from the world around. Fury is a comfortable and freely chosen alternative to fear and despair, while feelings of helplessness and uncertainty are countered and held in check by decisive action. Being intimately familiar with what it feels like to have one's freedom trampled on and taken away has made Vexx that much more protective of his ability to make a choice, any choice, and twice as willing to throw his full weight behind that decision. Sometimes this behavior manifests in ways that aren't so much practical as they are impulsive, however, because Vexx is entirely too headstrong to always (or often...) pick his battles with care or wisdom. When the easiest (or the only) choice seems to be giving up and accepting that the odds stacked against him are impossible to overcome, Vexx always persists in fighting for his own way. A rebel to the end, apathy is antithetical to his stubborn, defiant nature.
Yet even after everything, Vexx has not been warped beyond all recognition by the hardships he's suffered. Beneath the emotional damage is someone that's still a good person in many ways and not unlike a child in others. Growing up in a culture that valued peace and emphasized a respect of the world and those that inhabited it, Vexx retains an understanding of what such things mean despite the horrors he's witnessed and the cruelties he's survived. Sheltered by the simple, secluded village life that he had lived before, Vexx was easily manipulated by the first reasonable person he came across after starting his quest: "Darby", a kindly old man that was actually Dark Yabu in disguise. Raised by his grandfather to become the next guardian for their people, Vexx has been taught the importance of protecting others, especially the innocent and the weak, even at great personal cost. Before "Darby's" true self was revealed, Vexx sought to defend the "old man" from Reia, a mysterious Astani that Vexx had been tricked into mistrusting. Another, even more powerful example of this willingness to prioritize what he perceives as the greater good is seen after the Shadowraith's defeat; Vexx throws Reia's keystaff into the rift portal to close it, saving Astara from the forces of darkness and trapping himself in the Shadow Realm without a way home.
But make no mistake. Vargas also raised his grandson not to take shit from anyone, instilling a toughness in Vexx that mistreatment and hatred has since honed to a pragmatic ruthlessness. Fighting, punishing, even killing the bad guys isn't going to keep him up at night, nor will he apologize for it. Vexx is far from pacifistic, often impatient, still reckless, and is generally not the friendliest guy to encounter for the first time. Or the second....or the third. Having more reason than most to be wary of others after being played for a fool by Dark Yabu, it takes him awhile to warm up to strangers without a compelling reason to behave otherwise. That he's yet to heal from the loss of his grandfather and village goes unsaid and unspoken.
Ultimately, Vexx is a good guy — he's just not always a mature, patient, or especially nice one.
Powers/Abilities:
Vexx was trained to be the next guardian of his village — a role that necessitated training in melee combat, basic battle tactics, and athleticism. He can leap high, jump between nearby walls, shimmy along ledges, maintain his balance atop precarious perches, and execute a series of kicks, punches and uppercuts with deadly aplomb. Relying upon these skills to advance his quest across the god-forsaken, monster-infested remains of his world has honed them to a razor's edge. As a result, he's a nimble and able combatant when using his own fighting style and would be a complete novice at anything else, although he's shown to be quick-thinking enough to at least grasp the fundamentals if pressed. His people, the Valdar, are only shown to use primitive edged weapons when forced to take up arms, further underscoring the narrow scope of his experience.
Ultimately, Vexx is a normal kid from a backwater society whose real power lies in the gauntlets that are permanently fused to his hands: the Astani war talons. Passed down through generations of Astani guardians, these gauntlets are both weapon and quasi-sentient companion, carrying within them the knowledge borne by all previous talon-bearers and possessing a collective "self" capable of choosing their master and even communicating with them through dreams. Wielding the talons not only expands Vexx's moveset, allowing him to jump higher and farther, scale sheer walls, and propel himself through water, it also adds a new dimension to his fighting ability. Normal strikes are much stronger, with punches and uppercuts in particular manifesting as energy-based slashing attacks. If his enemies are (relatively) small enough, Vexx can even perform juggling beatdowns that keep their bodies aloft not unlike a soccer ball. Doing this for long enough allows the war talons to extract energy from the beleaguered foe and store it for later use; when enough is collected, Vexx can activate the fully charged gauntlets and fire off powerful blasts for a limited time.
The Astani war talons are further characterized by the noteworthy property of being able to absorb, channel, and transfer energy. From the juggling trick mentioned above to the invaluable role they play in restoring power to Astara's rift system, to being a requirement for utilizing the Air Suit (temporary flight) and Rock Suit (temporary invincibility), the gauntlets are able to act as a conduit of sorts for various elements.
